Getting Around Ubud

Arriving & Departing

Ubud is located in the middle of Bali, and if you're planning on getting there via flight, you really need to go to the Denpasar Bali Airport, which is located on the southern tip of the island. From there you can either rent a car or take a bus to get to Ubud. The island isn't necessarily huge, but it can take a while to get there because of the terrain, and not all of the roads are paved very well. Also, every year the roads get damaged due to the rains and harsh weather, so this can also slow things up a bit.

Car and Motorcycle

With numerous nearby attractions, many of which are difficult to reach by bemo, renting a vehicle is sensible. Ask at your accommodation or hire a car and driver. Ubud Bike Rental rents scooters and motorbikes and has a good selection. Daily rates are 30,000Rp.

Bemos

Bemos don't directly link Ubud with nearby villages; you'll have to catch one going to Denpasar or Gianyar and get off where you need to. Bemos to Gianyar travel along eastern Jl Raya Ubud, down Jl Peliatan and east to Bedulu. The fare for a ride within the Ubud area shouldn't be more than 7000Rp.

Taxi

There are no metered taxis based in Ubud – those that honk their horns at you have usually dropped off passengers from southern Bali in Ubud and are hoping for a fare back. Instead, you'll use one of the ubiquitous drivers with private vehicles hanging around on the streets hectoring passersby (the better drivers politely hold up signs that say 'transport').

Most of the drivers are very fair; a few – often from out of the area – not so much. If you find a driver you like, get his number and call him for rides during your stay. From central Ubud to, say, Sanggingan should cost about 40,000Rp – rather steep actually. A ride from the palace to the end of Jl Hanoman should cost about 20,000Rp.

It's easy to get a ride on the back of a motorbike; rates are half those of cars.
